“Crystal Palace Recording” audio clip

The earliest known recorded music in existence was captured by Thomas Edison’s “yellow paraffine cylinder” phonograph at the Crystal Palace in London in the summer of 1888. The oratorio “Israel In Egypt”, composed by G.F. Handel, was performed by a chorus of 4000 voices and recorded from 100 yards away.
